2021-22 NEP Season Announcement

The New England Philharmonic returns to the stage for its 45th season, welcoming to the podium four Music Director finalists and composer-in-residence Eric Nathan, making his Boston orchestral conducting debut.

BOSTON — The New England Philharmonic returns to the stage with five concerts for its 45th season. The NEP’s 2021-22 season welcomes four finalists for Music Director, who will each have the opportunity to conduct the ensemble through an entire concert cycle. Each concert features a fanfare commissioned by the NEP in honor of Music Director Emeritus Richard Pittman and his 23-year tenure with the ensemble.

The season opens on October 16th at All Saints Parish, under the baton of NEP Composer-in-Residence Eric Nathan, making his Boston orchestral conducting debut. The program features music by Nathan, NEP Composer Emeritus Bernard Hoffer, Hannah Kendall, and Stravinsky.

On December 5th, the NEP welcomes the first of the Music Director finalists, Adam Boyles, at BU’s Tsai Performance Center, with music by Michael Gandolfi, Bernard Rands, Amy Beach, and Ravel, and a performance by the winner of the 2021Young Artist Competition. The orchestra also welcomes back soprano Sarah Pelletier, to perform Amy Beach’s Jephthah’s Daughter.

Kicking off the second half of the season on February 26th, the NEP returns to BU Tsai Performance Center under the direction of Music Director finalist Nicholas DeMaison. This concert features music by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, Jonathan Bailey Holland, and Sibelius, and features Concertmaster Danielle Maddon in the Boston premiere of George Tsontakis’s Violin Concerto No. 3.

On May 1st, the NEP welcomes Music Director finalist Tianhui Ng to conduct a program with music by Yehudi Wyner, Chen Yi, Silvestre Revueltas, and Sofía Rocha, winner of the 2020 Call for Scores. This program also features Danielle Maddon as violin soloist in Yi’s Spring in Dresden.

At the season finale on June 18th, the NEP performs the Boston premiere of Eric Nathan’s Double Concerto for Solo Violin, Solo Clarinet, and String Orchestra, co-commissioned by the NEP and The New York Classical Players, featuring violinist Stefan Jackiw and clarinetist Yoonah Kim. Conducted by Music Director finalist Yoichi Udagawa, this program also presents works by TJ Cole, Witold Lutoslawski, Kathryn Salfelder, and Igor Santos, winner of the 2021 Call for Scores.

About the New England Philharmonic: Entering its 45th season, the NEP is internationally renowned for its adventurous programming encompassing both contemporary and traditional works. The volunteer orchestra has earned nine ASCAP awards for Adventurous Programming and was named Best Local Musician(s) of the Year in 2016 by The Arts Fuse. The orchestra’s ground-breaking past includes the establishment of three landmark programs: the NEP became the first orchestra of its size to support a Composer-in-Residence (1985), introduced a Call for Scores program (1985), and initiated a Young Artist Competition (1994), all of which continue today.
