Call for Scores Competition

The New England Philharmonic is one of few orchestras of its size in the country with a Composer-in-Residence program and an annual Call for Scores competition, both established in 1985.

The Call for Scores Competition receives annually over 100 submissions from composers around the world. Winning works are performed as part of an upcoming NEP season.

By presenting these new works in the context of pieces by established composers— including classics of the symphonic repertory—the NEP demonstrates that orchestral music is not a finished collection of museum pieces, but a living, evolving tradition. The NEP is committed to fostering the art of composition and presenting new works from the wide and diverse community of orchestral composers.

Aaron Israel Levin, Ten remarks on a city | 2026 Call for Scores Winner

For the 41st annual Call for Scores, the NEP received more than 180 submissions from composers all over the world. After careful review of the submissions, Composer-in-Residence Carlos Carrillo and Music Director Tian Ng selected Aaron Israel Levin’s composition Ten remarks on a city as the winning work, which will be performed by the NEP in the 2026-27 season.

Aaron Israel Levin is an American composer whose music is guided by the emotional dynamism of storytelling and drama. Drawing on an eclectic range of influences, his work weaves fluidly between playful and somber, lyrical and gestural, tender and fierce. He has been commissioned and performed by the Aizuri Quartet, the American Composers Orchestra, Eighth Blackbird Creative Lab, Onix Ensamble, Sputter Box, and the Historical Keyboard Society of North America. Originally from St. Paul, Minnesota, Aaron is a graduate of Grinnell College (BA) and the Yale School of Music (MM), where he is currently pursuing his DMA. He is the 2024-26 Vanguard Composer-in-Residence with Chicago Opera Theater.
